Guelaguetza, Oaxaca – A legendary festival

The Guelaguetza is a celebration which is held every summer in the city of Oaxaca de Juarez, is part of the popular cults of the Virgen del Carmen and is celebrated on the two Mondays closest to the Catholic holiday. It is a congregation of the 16 ethnic groups of the state, is an atmosphere of joy and festivity which is carried out through various cultural expressions and dances with colorful costumes.

History of traditions the Guelaguetza in Oaxaca

It history goes back to the beliefs and ancestral roots of its pre-Hispanic peoples centuries ago in which the American continent flourished and dominated its culture and traditions. At that time, during the rainy season in Oaxaca, tribute was paid to the gods of corn and agriculture in gratitude for the good harvests, these celebrations were vetoed by the Spanish missionaries, considering them pagan.

The old customs and the new ones were merged over the years. It was in 1932 when the modern celebration known as Guelaguetza was born, which is a tribute to the ethnic and cultural diversity of Oaxaca through handicrafts, gastronomy, sports, customs of its different communities, concerts  and exhibitions of the state of Oaxaca.
