Monte Alban, or “Albin Mountains” is due a fact that they encountered the immensity of the white flowers of the cazahuate trees that covered the hill. In the past, was formerly called Danibaan (Sacred Mountain). Declared World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987. It was a great ceremonial city in about the year 500 ad., this center once ruled the entire region and collected tribute from the surrounding cities. Best known as the Zapotec center and situated just outside Oaxaca de Juárez. Its ruins at the top of the hill are a truly impressive site. It is a must-see attraction, undoubtedly its splendor and precise design is one of the great things to admire in Mexico.
Monte Alban and its Danzantes (Dancers), is a group of nude human figures resembling feline attitudes between jaguars and Zapotec leaders. These figures carved in stone during the first period of Monte Alban, their meaning has been interpreted as shamans or prisoners of war, for the inhabitants of the city remains a mystery.
