Santo Tomás Jalieza, is a small town located just 45 minutes south of Oaxaca City, known as the "town of the belts" where through the skill of the hands of Oaxacan artisans make real magic.

It is a picturesque town that has become famous for the weaving of cotton fabrics that has been a Zapotec industry in Oaxaca for 2,500 years.

Santo Tomás Jalieza, is a small town located just 45 minutes south of Oaxaca City, known as the “town of the belts” where through the skill of the hands of Oaxacan artisans make real magic with the threads in the development of fabrics in backstrap looms through generations in their workshops in their homes and have put high the municipality.

The native weavers continue to use ancient traditional designs. Every friday several artisans gather to offer tourists various items where you can find belts, jackets, tablecloths, ponchos, dresses, overcoats, bags, blouses, huipiles, among others.

In this town are also important pre-Hispanic vestiges and figures, dating from 500 years B.C., on the outskirts, there is a famous rock “Piedra de la Letra”, it is said that under is a door leading to the underworld. In the hill of Yabeo where two streams of springs are born from the hillside, it is said that it was a site of offerings for the pre-Hispanic gods and that every December 21 on the winter solstice, their ancestors came to this sacred place and observed the alignment of the stars engraved on other stones. This site was considered second in importance in the region during the peak of Monte Alban.

Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, this ritual was modified and in its place was instilled the veneration of Saint Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus. Today, every December 21st is the feast of their patron saint.
