Culiapam, Zaachila & Arrazola, Oaxaca – World famous handcrafts & Alebrijes
Cuilapam, formerly called Coyolapan, a religious complex
Cuilapam, in Nahuatl means “Dyed River” or “Rattles over waters”. It was formerly called Coyolapan, it’s an unfinished but marvelous religious complex, constructed by Dominicans in the 16th century. It is renowned for its different styles of construction, for its open chapel and for being the place of the execution of a Mexican patriot “General Vicente Guerrero”.
Zaachila, a fascinating town
Known for being the last capital of the Zapotec empire and for its Thursday’s market where inhabitants of the surrounding villages congregate to sell their products. It is worth visiting the two tombs with their intriguing interior relieves (human figures from which the flesh has been removed, felines, owls, etc.).
Arrazola a village located in the shadow of Monte Alban
It is a town that is fast becoming known around the world for its unique wood carvings “Alebrijes”, which are wild animals and brightly colored, hand-carved monsters, “mystical animals”. Some of these figures are really appreciated by collectors and internationally recognized. The whole town is dedicated to the creation of these crafts.
